Iko Rolling Stone

December 31, 2006

The Cedar, the Dean, and the Wu.  I spent some quality time with this group last night.  Dean Magraw joined The Big Wu for their second set on the intimate stage of the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis.  Dean immediately kicked it into high gear with an infectiously upbeat rendition of Iko-Iko.  He sang and he danced, with his fingers on the fretboard and his whole body on the stage.  Have you seen this guy perform?  Music and rhythm explode from his fingers and his feet and his frame.  Whether he's soloing or comping or just listening to the other musicians, he grins and gallivants around like he can't help himself.

And it's infectious, dammit!  You wanna catch a dose of musical exuberance, just get close to Dean when he performs.  This guy embodies the notion of the Joy of Music!
Dean and the Wu ended the set with a fabulous version of Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," and sent me home, hoarse and crying.
